Some idea of the cost of removal of pipelines is provided by a BSEE report for the GoM region. In all cases, it is more hazardous to remove pipelines than to abandon in situ.

An overview has been given of the processes for decommissioning pipelines and other offshore components. The principal factors that influence the methods of decommissioning were identified: these being, environmental and safety concerns, public opinion, political needs and finally cost effectiveness.
